Backed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, this flagship initiative features a massive annual prize pool of ₦365 million aimed at recognizing, rewarding, and commercializing groundbreaking research created by students across the country.

The initiative seeks to elevate academic rigor, encourage practical problem-solving, and build a nationwide repository of Nigerian scholarly achievements.

Who Is Eligible to Apply?

The national research award is open to students enrolled in all accredited tertiary institutions across Nigeria. Participating institutions include:

• Public and private universities
• Polytechnics and monotechnics
• Colleges of education
• Military academic institutions

The selection process relies on internal academic screening. Every eligible institution must set up an Institutional Laureate Selection Committee composed of senior academics and researchers of high ethical standing. These internal panels will evaluate student work before submitting top entries for regional and national review.

To qualify for consideration, all submitted research must align with one of six broad thematic fields designed to address critical national development needs:

The Federal Government has structured the ₦365 million prize package into major overall category prizes and thematic honors:

• Best Undergraduate Research: ₦35 million
• Best Master’s Thesis: ₦50 million
• Best Doctoral (PhD) Research: ₦100 million
• 15 Thematic Laureate Awards: ₦12 million each

This makes the programme one of the largest financial investments in student academic research in West Africa.

How the Selection Process Works

Each higher institution is permitted to submit a maximum of 18 entries, broken down as follows:

• 6 undergraduate projects (or equivalent diploma projects for polytechnics/colleges)
• 6 master’s theses
• 6 doctoral dissertations

The competition follows a rigorous three-tier evaluation system:

1. Institutional Screening: Schools conduct internal evaluations led by their appointed committee.
2. Regional Vetting: Subject matter experts nominated by professional bodies review submissions at the regional level.
3. National Adjudication: A panel of leading national scholars assesses final candidates to select the grand winners.

Mandatory NERD Upload and Document Verification

To enforce research integrity, prevent plagiarism, and build a permanent academic archive, all nominated research works must first be uploaded to the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD).

Upon upload, each document will be assigned a unique National Document Number (NDN). Research without a valid NDN will not be evaluated. Institutional NERD Focal Officers will activate the submission portal to grant authorized committee members secure access.

Key Deadlines to Remember

The Chairman of the National Laureate Committee, Emeritus Prof. Abubakar Sambo, has outlined strict deadlines for participating institutions:
